In Newburgh, where reconstruction and abandonment are ubiquitous, space is always changing. Sites are simultaneously signified and delineated with caution tape, sending an obscure message of transformation; one can't tell what is coming or going. Taking the old adage 'throwing caution to the wind', Hanny Ahern approaches the question of vacancy symbolically and site specifically within the Newburgh Community Land Bank’s properties headed for restoration. Going Gone is an assemblage of tattered aphorisms—cut and reconfigured from Caution/Cuidado/Danger/Peligro/Soften tapes–which re-contextualize the tapes' letters and message into emblems of their transitional environment. The work provokes us to question the multiplicity of meaning and misinterpretation inherent in a site’s abandonment, and nudges us to pay attention to the ways in which the red tape releases space for re-imagination and opens dialogue between people and place.
